Donnie and Marie Osmond are calling it quits on their Las Vegas residency after 11 years.
The duo began their Strip show at Caesars Entertainment’s Flamingo on the Strip in September of 2008. Originally scheduled to last six weeks, the brother-sister act say they will take their last bow on November 16, 2019.
The Osmonds broke the news of their residency ending on ABC’s Good Morning America. Marie talked about the personal difficulties she endured during the 11-year run, and how the show helped.
I have been through a lot, but he’s (Donny) been my rock. I went through a terrible divorce here, and I lost a child here,” Marie said.
Donny added, “What she’s gone through, and still remained a professional and goes out there and performs for the audience… there’s a bond here that will never be broken.”
Unlike other high-profile celebrity residencies in Las Vegas, the Osmond show is an intimate performance, with just 750 fans in attendance each night at the Donny & Marie Showroom.
Osmond Past
Donny’s a little bit country and Marie a little bit rock ‘n’ roll, and since the mid 1970s, the duo has been entertaining American audiences.
Donny’s career began with his family’s namesake music group, which originally consisted of himself and his four brothers – Alan, Wayne, Merrill, and Jay.
The teen idols peaked in the early 1970s, and to date have sold more than 77 million records. America has been home to numerous successful musical groups consisting solely of family members. Notables include The Jackson 5, The Carpenters, Gladys Knight & the Pips, and more recently – the Jonas Brothers.
The Donny & Marie TV show ran for three years between 1976 and 1979, and the Friday night broadcast was one of television’s biggest hits. Around 14 million viewers tuned in each Friday night.
“I think there’s a unique chemistry, and people love that sibling sound,” Marie explained of the success.
Residency Revenues
Enduring an 11-year residency in Las Vegas is no easy feat, but it’s far from being one of the longest running shows in Sin City.
“Crazy Girls” opened on the Strip in 1983, and 35 years later is still selling tickets at Planet Hollywood. Frank Marino’s “Divas Las Vegas” was another show that spanned more than two decades, but was abruptly canceled last July by Caesars Entertainment.
As for the top-earning residency shows, Billboard says no one has made more in Las Vegas than Celine Dion. Her “New Day” performance that ran between 2003 through 2007 sold more than 2.8 million tickets on revenues totaling $385.1 million.
Her current show – “Celine” – which began in 2011 and will end this June, has sold more than 1.5 million tickets for roughly $246 million.
Elton John’s “Red Piano” (2004-2009) is third at $166.4 million on nearly one million tickets sold. Britney Spears’ 2013-2017 run is fourth at $137.7 million (916,184 tickets sold), and Elton again at No. 5 with “The Million Dollar Piano” ($131.2 million, 776,000 tickets).
