New York Giants Quarterback Daniel Jones Exits Week 5 Loss with Injury

The New York Giants lost quarterback Daniel Jones to a neck injury after the Miami Dolphins sacked him six times in Week 5.

The Dolphins defeated the Giants, 31-16, and improved to 4-1 on the season. The Giants lost three games in a row and sunk to 1-4.

Dolphins linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel sacked Jones in the fourth quarter, and Jones did not return to the game. The hit was the 16th sack that a defenseless Jones incurred in the last two games.

The Giants said that Jones suffered a neck injury. He underwent X-rays, which were negative, and he will undergo additional testing on Monday.

Prior to his injury, Jones completed 14-of-20 passes for 119 yards. He also added 24 rushing yards.

Backup QB Tyrod Taylor finished the game for the Giants and led them to one scoring drive that resulted in a field goal. Taylor completed 9-of-12 passes for 86 yards, and added 14 rushing yards. He was sacked once.

The Giants play the Buffalo Bills on Sunday Night Football in Week 6. Jones is listed as questionable on the injury list. If Jones is unable to play, then Taylor will start against the Bills.

Taylor has a 26-25-1 record as a starting quarterback, and started 42 games with the Bills between 2015 and 2017.

Rag Doll Jones: O-Line Woes Leads to Injury

The Giants had a subpar offensive line over the last decade, but injuries to starters compounded the problem this season. Left tackle Andrew Thomas went down with a hamstring injury in the first drive of the season, which quickly exposed the Giants’ depth issues and inexperience.

The Giants used four different starting lineups for their offensive line this season. Rookie center John Michael Schmitz missed Week 5 with a shoulder injury, and left guard Ben Bredeson played center against the Dolphins.

The porous offensive line allowed Jones to get sacked 28 times this season. In Week 4, the Seattle Seahawks sacked Jones ten times in 24-3 victory on Monday Night Football. The Dolphins sacked Jones six times before he left with an injury early in the fourth quarter.

We’ve got to figure out a way to protect him better,” said Giants head coach Brian Daboll.

Jones and the offense struggled this season because of their O-line deficiencies. Jones completed 68.9% of his passes this season for 884 yards and only two touchdowns. He threw six interceptions and already surpassed last season’s total of five picks in 16 games.

Jones has a QBR rating of 39.6 and ranked #28 on ESPN.

The Giants average 12.4 points per game, and they’re the second-lowest scoring team in the NFL. In their four losses this season, the Giants averaged 7.75 points and scored one offensive touchdown. Their only touchdown in Week 5 was the result of a pick-six interception by safety Jason Pinnock, who rumbled 102-yards after picking off Tua Tagovailoa in the end zone.

They entered the season with a win total of 7.5 over/under. After losing four out of their first five games, the Giants currently have a win total of 5.5 o/u.

The Giants are a long shot to make the playoffs at +1500 odds, and they’re -6000 to miss the postseason. In the preseason, the Giants were +160 odds to qualify for the playoffs and -190 odds to miss it.

The last place Giants are a long shot to win the NFC East at +5000 odds.

Only the Arizona Cardinals (+25000) and Carolina Panthers (+2500) have longer odds than the Giants (+1800) to win the NFC Championship.

The Giants are near the bottom of DraftKings’ NFL futures board at +20000 odds to win Super Bowl LVIII. In the preseason, the Giants were +6500 odds to win the Super Bowl. They began a freefall in the futures market since their season-opening loss in a 40-0 shutout against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1.
