Binion’s Gambling Hall & Hotel was damaged over the weekend after being hit by gunfire during a large unrelated fight.
On Saturday, at least one bullet struck a ceiling tile in the casino’s canopy. Glass also was shattered at the property, according to Las Vegas TV station KLAS.
No estimate to repair the damage was released by police.
The alleged shooter, Daniel Porter, 42, was arrested and remains in custody at the Clark County Detention Center.
Porter allegedly fired four rounds in the direction of a group of people during the fight. He had a 9mm gun when searched by police officers.
He was charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, as well as discharging a firearm into an occupied structure, carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, owning or possessing a firearm by a prohibited person, and possession of a controlled substance.
He will next appear in local court on August 21. If convicted on the charges, he could face years in prison.
Later, he wrote an apology to the casino for damaging their property.
30 in Fight
The fight, which occurred near Fremont Street and Casino Center Boulevard at about 5 a.m. on Saturday involved some 30 individuals.
When asked about the gun while being booked at a local police station after the incident, Porter told officers he purchased the 9mm firearm for $100 just a week before the shooting. During the booking procedure, Porter also allegedly dropped a bag containing a white powdery substance determined to be cocaine, police said. Police didn’t specify its street value.
Officers also found methamphetamine (meth) in Porter’s possession. He told police that he used cocaine and meth before the shooting took place, police said.
When speaking to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) officers, Porter added that he enjoyed being in Downtown Las Vegas. He also complained that he didn’t like the Californians who frequent the Fremont Street area and claimed they were responsible for starting the fight over the weekend.
It appears none of the individuals involved in the fight were seriously injured.
Porter’s Convictions
When police checked Porter’s criminal background, it was revealed he’s no stranger to gun-related charges or violence.
He’s been convicted of burglary, discharging a firearm into an occupied structure, discharging a firearm out of a vehicle, assault, and attempted murder, KLAS reported.
