Nevada’s critical election results were unknown Tuesday night due to multiple-hour delays for voters in some polling locations in the state. The delay comes as several key states were getting called for Donald Trump.
Election sites in Nevada were supposed to close at 7 p.m. PT, but long lines in Nye and Washoe counties were extending the cutoff for those who showed up in the early evening to cast their votes.
The lines in these locations could lead to up to three hours in delays before results could be known.
The estimated wait time to vote at the University of Nevada, Reno, was three hours as of early Tuesday evening, Bethany Drysdale, a Washoe County official, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
At 8:30 p.m. PT, voters still were seen standing in line at 10 polling sites in Washoe County, the report added.
In addition, delays were seen at the Bob Ruud community center in Pahrump, Nev., which is located in Nye County, some 50 miles west of Las Vegas.
Only three voting machines reportedly were in use at the Pahrump polling site. In addition, the site saw 145 same-day registrations by voters, further delaying the process.
The evening line to vote at the Bob Ruud community center was estimated to be two hours long, Jacob Smith, an ACLU attorney, told the Review-Journal.
Voters Frustrated
I think people are definitely frustrated, but they’re standing firm in their desire to vote,” Smith revealed to the Review-Journal. He called the lines “massive.”
Some voters at the community center chose to fill in paper ballots rather than use the machines, further causing delays, Smith added.
The ACLU of Nevada was among the organizations which were monitoring the polls in the state, and the delay was “not surprising,” Athar Haseebullah, the organization’s executive director, told the Review-Journal.
They’re not prepared,” Haseebullah added about the lines in Nye County. “They don’t have enough machines to check people in, and they don’t have enough workers.”
The results will not be known statewide at least until every voter standing in line gets to vote.
Nevada is one of the states that may play a key role in how the national race for president will turn out.
The race was predicted to be neck and neck between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Key States Called for Trump
Nationally, as of 9 p.m. PT, results were still being tabulated. North Carolina, one of the key battleground states, was called for Trump by news organizations. Georgia also was called for Trump as of 10 p.m. PT. Pennsylvania was called for Trump as of 10:20 p.m. PT by Fox News.
In early exit polls, one-quarter of those interviewed nationally told CNN they were enthusiastic or satisfied with the state of the nation. But more than four in 10 were dissatisfied and some three of 10 called themselves angry.
This story will be updated as more results are released.
