Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Rose, two of the five players who control their own destinies this week at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, are the odds-on favorites to win the 2018 FedEx Cup and its $10 million top prize.
The top five point leaders heading into the Tour Championship, the last of four FedEx Cup playoff events, have no one else to worry about but themselves. No. 1 DeChambeau, No. 2 Rose, No. 3 Tony Finau, No. 4 Dustin Johnson, and No. 5 Justin Thomas win the $10 million jackpot with a win this weekend in Georgia.
With DeChambeau and Rose respectively having the best chance of still winning the $10 million without winning the Tour Championship, and the Westgate SuperBook gives the frontrunners the shortest odds of pocketing the largest payday in golf. The casino has both players at 2/1, or implied odds of 33.3 percent. A $100 wager nets the gambler $200.
Top 10 Lurking
The 2018 FedEx Cup Playoffs have been cut down from the 125 players who began the first tournament at The Northern Trust to just 30 entering this week. After the points reset ahead of the Tour Championship, here’s where the top 10 stand, and their odds for winning the $10 million:
- Bryson DeChambeau – 2,000 (2/1)
- Justin Rose – 1,800 (2/1)
- Tony Finau – 1,520 (13/2)
- Dustin Johnson – 1,296 (6/1)
- Justin Thomas – 1,280 (8/1)
- Keegan Bradley – 1,120 (50/1)
- Brooks Koepka – 960 (16/1)
- Bubba Watson – 800 (60/1)
- Billy Horschel – 640 (50/1)
- Cameron Smith – 480 (60/1)
The Tour Championship presents oddsmakers with the difficult task of setting lines on two outcomes that are dependent on one event. It’s a balancing act of determining who the bookies will think will win this week against who is still likeliest to emerge atop the FedEx Cup points list come Sunday night.
The SuperBook thinks Rose is the favorite this week at East Lake, but doesn’t have much confidence in DeChambeau, who is long at 20/1. The other three in the top five are Johnson (9/1), Thomas (10/1), and Finau (16/1).
Big Name Longshots
As far as the $10 million FedEx Cup title goes, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson would need a plethora of scenarios to go their way, and also win the Tour Championship. The SuperBook has Woods at 60/1, and Lefty at 150/1.
Many golf fans hope to be glued to their televisions Sunday with Woods in contention. The 14-time major champ hasn’t won a PGA Tour event since 2013, but he’s recently been in the hunt.
Woods has six top-10 finishes in 2018, including a runner-up finish at the PGA Championship last month. Many golf observers believe a Tiger victory at the Tour Championship would be a most fitting conclusion to the FedEx Cup.
Tiger’s at 12/1 to win the Tour Championship, tied for the fifth-shortest line of the 30-man field. Mickelson is long at 50/1.
And as for the Tiger vs. Phil showdown in Las Vegas on November 23, Woods remains the favorite at -180, and Mickelson the underdog at +150.
