Influx Of Interest

Expect this list of 28 operators to grow fast. Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis (AGLC) plans to release weekly updates but warned of a “high volume of inquiries,” noting that priority is being given to those who have already paid their registration fees.

Big name operators appearing in this incarnation of the AGLC list include: FanDuel, PointsBet Canada, BetRivers, theScore Bet, Jackpot City, Spin Casino, Ruby Fortune, Bet99, Betway, Betty, BetMGM, Bally’s, DraftKings, Golden Nugget, and Caesars (Caesars Sportsbook, Horseshoe Online Casino, Caesars Palace Online).

45 Licensed Operators in Ontario

Beyond the sportsbooks, the AGLC has cleared 22 system providers, 8 platform developers, and 11 goods and services suppliers to power the province’s new digital ecosystem.

Alberta’s new, open regulated igaming will compete with the government’s Play Alberta platform, with a regulatory regime similar to the one in Ontario, that’s now four years old. As of this morning, according to iGaming Ontario, there are 45 licensed operators and 79 gaming websites that are live in Ontario.

In Alberta, AGLC is the regulator responsible for registrations and regulatory oversight. The new Alberta iGaming Corporation is responsible for the commercial agreement with operators, anti-money laundering, pubic complaints and financial and income reporting.

20% House Cut

When things get going, Alberta’s “house cut” will be 20% of net igaming revenue, with 80% going to operators. Plus 2% of total gross gaming revenue (GGR) will go to support First Nations and 1% to total GGR will be allocated to social responsibility initiatives.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to expand DraftKings’ footprint in Canada and bring our online sportsbook and casino experiences to customers in Alberta,” said Greg Karamitis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Sports at DraftKings, in April.

“With the anticipated launch aligning with the World Cup — hosted right here in North America — it’s a particularly exciting moment for sports fans in the province to engage with our platform.”
