During Pearl Jam’s recent two-night stint at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, singer Eddie Vedder staked a front-row audience member.
“Here’s $500, just see if you can double it, I trust you,” Vedder told the fan, who identified herself as Erin.
“If you lose it all, it was part of the experiment, and if you win any of it, we split it,” Vedder said.
To be honest, this part of the “experiment” seemed pre-planned. However, what happened next did not…
Two nights later, during Pearl Jam’s next and final concert at the same Vegas venue, Vedder asked Erin for the results.
“Was there any return on the investment?” he asked. “Any whatsoever?”
Erin handed him an envelope with writing on the outside of it.
“I’m not sure what’s happening here,” the confused rocker said as he began reading the message to 17,000 people.
“Ed, I stayed up all night but in the end, the casino had the upper hand,” it read.
And yet the envelope was still stuffed with $1,500 cash.
Appealing to Fans’ Vedder Nature
Explaining that she “already won the lottery just through these experiences,” Erin raised the money for Vedder’s charity, the EB Research Partnership, by walking the concert’s merch line earlier that evening, telling other fans what happened and asking them for donations.
Within 20 minutes, she already doubled Vedder’s stake and kept going.
The EB Research Partnership was co-founded in 2010 by Vedder and his wife, Jill, after her childhood friend’s son was born with a rare and sometimes-fatal skin disorder called Epidermolysis Bullosa.
“Holy fucking shit,” Vedder said, visibly moved. “Well that I did not expect. We’re so thankful, the whole EB community thanks you.”
After wiping away tears, Vedder handed the envelope to his wife Jill, who was also in the front row.
Vedder then jokingly instructed her to “try and double it.”
