Harry Reid Airport Flights Delayed/Canceled, Low Clouds Blamed

Some 78 flights were canceled and 590 were delayed at Las Vegas’s Harry Reid International Airport by the middle of Monday afternoon because of troubling weather conditions.
Weather at the airport was so serious that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued an airport closure at 10 a.m. PT, according to Las Vegas TV station KTNV. It was expected to end at noon PT.
As of 3 p.m. PT, the airport was seeing departure delays that lasted an average of 1 hour and 3 minutes, according to FlightAware, a national flight tracking service.
Flights arriving at the airport were delayed an average of 1 hour and 9 minutes, FlightAware reported. Some flight delays at Harry Reid Airport extended for several hours.
Airport ground delays were expected to continue through 11 p.m. PT on Monday, according to KTNV.
Low Clouds Blamed
The delays and cancellations were due to low clouds, the airport explained in a post for passengers. Airport officials further advised passengers and those who were driving them to and from the airport to “Monitor your flight status with your airline.”
Light rain was falling in Las Vegas as of 3 p.m. on Monday, according to local weather forecasts. The temperature was 52 degrees. Humidity was 90%.
Looking to Monday evening, Las Vegas is expected to see more rain, some of which is expected to be heavy at times. Rainfall was to total about a quarter of an inch or more.
Monday night’s low was predicted to hit 49 degrees. Winds will be from the northeast at 5 to 10 mph.
The weather on Tuesday is expected to bring more rain during the morning hours, and showers will eventually taper off. Skies will be overcast later in the day and the high temperature is expected to hit 55 degrees.
By Wednesday, Las Vegas will see partly cloudy conditions during the morning. It will turn cloudy by the afternoon. The high will hit 59 degrees.

Monday’s flight delays and cancellations were seen in many parts of the US, not just in Nevada, according to FlightAware. The total number of delays within, into, or out of the US as of Monday afternoon were 4,468. Total cancellations within, into, or out of the US were 895.
Among the most impacted cities where flights were delayed or canceled were Chicago, St. Louis, and Seattle.
