Possibly the most enticing storyline among a slew of NFL coaching narratives today was a potential reunion between Tom Brady and Bill Belichick with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Brady, it was reported, had reached out to his former New England Patriots coach to come over and take on the Raiders’ head coaching job.
Belichick Starts North Carolina Job
Brady is a minority owner with the Raiders now. Brady and Belichick won six Super Bowls together with the Patriots. The Raiders fired head coach Antonio Pierce Tuesday. Belichick recently accepted a job offer to take over as head coach at the University of North Carolina – signing a five-year contract – and has been busy putting together his staff.
According to reporting at NFL.com: “Sources say Brady believes the situation in Las Vegas requires a coach of Belichick’s expertise and stature to establish a sustainable winning program.”
Pierce Fired Tuesday
Brady played 20 seasons for the Patriots under Belichick.
According to that NFL.com story, Belichick’s contract with North Carolina includes a $10 million buyout if he leaves prior to June 1, 2025, which Belichick or the Raiders would have to pay.
The New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears, Patriots and Raiders currently have head coaching vacancies.
Raiders Looking at Rebuild
According to the Athletic this afternoon, though, Belichick says he has no intention of leaving UNC and is focusing on coaching and recruiting for the Tar Heels.
“I didn’t come here to leave,” he said to reporters on Dec. 12, the day after taking the Carolina job.
The Raiders need all the help they can get, finishing this season dead last in the AFC West at 4-13.
