Jacky Rosen has taken the lead in the tight race for Nevada’s Senate seat against challenger Sam Brown.

As of early Thursday, Rosen, the Democratic incumbent, led Brown (R), by 12,699 votes, based on numbers reported by the Associated Press.

Rosen was leading with 47.6% of the votes, which totaled 644,471, as of Thursday morning. Brown had 46.7% of the votes totaling 631,772.

The new totals came after election workers reportedly processed approximately 55K votes that included mail-in ballots and those dropped off at polling locations on Election Day.

More Votes

It’s believed thousands of additional ballots may still be counted in the race, according to Las Vegas TV station KLAS. These include votes cast in Clark and Washoe counties. If mail-in ballots were postmarked by Election Day, they will be counted in the race if received before Saturday.

On Wednesday, Brown, a former Army officer, reportedly got a boost when more votes were counted from Nye County, a Republican-dominated area. On the other hand, votes from Washoe County, which has many Democrats, boosted Rosen’s totals.

Due to the tight race, neither candidate claimed victory when speaking to supporters on Tuesday night after polls closed.

As of Thursday morning, Rosen was projected to win against Brown, according to Decision Desk HQ, The Hill reported.

Flawed Signatures

Another wrinkle in the counting of votes includes some 12,736 mail-in ballots, as of Wednesday, from throughout Nevada, that need to have a signature verified before they are included in totals. If voters can be contacted to resolve the issue, they have until November 12 to confirm their signature.

If Brown wins, it will boost the upcoming Republican majority in the US Senate. As of Thursday, the Republicans’ total count in the Senate is 52 versus 44 for the Democrats, based on the latest projections from the AP.

Not every Senate race has been officially called. In some of Tuesday’s Senate races, the Republican candidates benefited from the historic victory seen by former President Donald Trump (R) over Vice President Kamala Harris (D).

Berkley Leading in Vegas Mayor’s Race

As of Wednesday, former US Rep. Shelley Berkley (D) was reportedly ahead in the contested race to become Las Vegas’ next mayor. She had more than 50% of the vote over her opponent, Councilwoman Victoria Seaman (R).

Berkley received approximately 52.8% of the votes, giving her a 12,806-vote lead, Las Vegas TV station KSNV reported on Wednesday.

The eventual winner will replace the husband-and-wife team of Oscar and Carolyn Goodman. Combined, the two have held the mayor’s post for 25 years.
