Paterson, 70, who’s legally blind, was punched while Sliwa, 20, was shoved to the sidewalk and kicked by two young assailants in Manhattan’s Upper East Side during a Friday incident, according to local press reports.

Two adults and two boys were arrested for the assault.

The adults are both city housing authority workers. One of the suspects, Travor Nurse, 40, was charged with second-degree gang assault and assault injuring a victim 65 or older. Diamond Minter, 34, was also charged with second-degree gang assault.

The men allegedly encouraged the two boys, ages 12 and 13, to attack Paterson and his stepson. Both boys were charged with gang assault, the younger in the second degree and the older in the third degree.

A third boy was investigated by New York Police Department (NYPD) officers, but wasn’t charged.

The assault occurred about 8:30 p.m. Friday outside of 1871 2nd Avenue after an argument broke out.

Both Hospitalized

Both victims were taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center for treatment. The former governor suffered a head injury, according to the New York Post. Sliwa had facial injuries, the report added.

They were discharged from the hospital on Saturday.

Anthony … is still recovering as he was violently beaten to the ground, while standing his ground with Governor Paterson, who is recovering as well,” according to a recent post on X, formerly Twitter, from Curtis Sliwa, the younger victim’s father. He’s also the Guardian Angels founder who unsuccessfully ran for New York City mayor as a Republican.

“If a former Governor can’t even be safe of violence, no one is safe,” Curtis Sliwa added. “Too many #NYC families have had a loved one fall victim to violence.”

“Governor Paterson and his family are glad to see the suspects turned themselves in,” a spokesperson for Paterson said in a statement. “We hope that the young people involved learn something from this unfortunate encounter.”

Paterson Praises Stepson

When speaking to reporters on Saturday, Paterson praised the bravery of his stepson.

I think he should be very proud of himself for when he saw them attack me — he intervened,” Paterson was quoted.

Paterson is senior vice president and senior advisor at Las Vegas Sands Corp. He has worked on the company’s efforts to get a downstate New York casino license.
