Mohegan has landed the honor of being the only gaming company to snag a spot on the Global Most Loved Workplaces 2024 list, a Rolodex of admired employers compiled by Newsweek and the Best Practice Institute.
Best Practice Institute, a leadership development, executive coaching, and human resources consultancy based in Florida, surveyed more than two million employees to gauge how well they liked their job. The many interviews and questionnaires helped BPI boil down the list to the top 100 companies to work for, with Mohegan coming in at No. 77.
It is a great privilege for Mohegan to be recognized in Newsweek’s Top 100 Global Most Loved Workplaces,” said Ray Pineault, president and CEO of Mohegan. “This recognition underscores our dedication to fostering a positive and engaging workplace.
Formerly Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment until its May 2022 rebranding to simply Mohegan, the company is the gaming unit fully owned by the Mohegan Tribe in Connecticut.
Workplace Accolade
The Best Practice Institute surveyed worker sentiment about how they feel about their future at the company, career achievement and advancement avenues, employee values, and worker respect. Criteria also centered around inclusion, wellness, and diversity.
Mohegan offers many opportunities for voices to be heard by conducting traditional team member engagement surveys, staff meetings, town halls, and regular team member updates, as well as Kaizen events and opportunities for breakfast with the president,” the BPI summarized about the casino operator. “Mohegan offers transfer and promotion opportunities, stretch assignments, tuition reimbursement, in-house training programs, and off-site seminars to support employees in making career choices compatible with their own unique skills, knowledge, personality and interests.”
Mohegan is the only gaming company to be included on the list published by Newsweek. Only one hotel brand got a spot — Wyndham Hotels & Resorts at No. 19.
Mohegan told BPI that it directly employs over 11K people. Nearly 8,000 of those jobs are at its flagship Mohegan Sun resort in Uncasville, Ct.
Global Expansion
Mohegan the company traces its roots to the early 1990s when the tribe opened Mohegan Sun as a bingo hall. The property has undergone vast expansions since to become one of the largest integrated resort casinos in the world.
Mohegan Sun has over 300,000 square feet of casino space, two hotels with 1,563 guestrooms, 130,000 square feet of retail shopping, over 45 restaurants and bars, three entertainment venues, and 375,000 square feet of meeting and function space. Resort attractions include a 55-foot indoor waterfall, a 17,500-square-foot outdoor sun terrace, two indoor pools, and two full-service spas.
Mohegan operates Mohegan Pennsylvania in the Pocono Mountains and Casino Niagara and Fallsview Casino Resort in Canada’s Niagara Falls. The company also runs the ilani Casino on behalf of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe in Washington, Resorts in Atlantic City, and Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, though each of those management agreements is winding down.
Mohegan is focusing its business internationally, most specifically in South Korea. Mohegan last fall opened the first phase of Inspire Entertainment Resort at Incheon International Airport. The $1.6 billion integrated resort has 1,275 guestrooms and suites, 10 restaurants, an immersive entertainment walk, and a 15,000-person arena and events center.
