Monday Night Football heads south of the border, as the Kansas City Chiefs clash with the Los Angeles Chargers in an AFC West duel to end Week 11.
First place in the division will be on the line, as the 6-4 Chiefs are currently tied with the Oakland Raiders atop the division. But they’re coming off a stunning 35-32 loss to Tennessee last week, where the Titans scored the go-ahead touchdown with :23 left and then blocked a potential game-tying field goal at the buzzer.
The Chargers, coming off a 26-24 Thursday Night loss at Oakland in Week 10, sit in third at 4-6. That loss in Oakland has been indicative of their season. Each of the six losses have been by seven points or less.
Oddsmakers predict another close one, though the spread is growing. What started as a 4-point line now ranges between 4.5 points at DraftKings and 5.5 points at FanDuel. The over/under is 52.5 at most sportsbooks. By 6 pm, the spread at FanDuel, Westgate SuperBook, Bet888, and SugarHouse had climbed to 6.
The game will be played at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Kickoff is set for 8:15 pm ET.
Bettors Back Chiefs
According to sports analytics site numberFire, football bettors at FanDuel are jumping on the Chiefs for Monday night.
As of 5 pm ET Monday afternoon, 85 percent of the FanDuel bettors are spotting the points. Those bets account for 81 percent of the money wagered on the spread.
On the moneyline, the Chiefs are -245. However, that’s not scaring away bettors, as 57 percent of moneyline bets are on Kansas City, with those bettors plunking down about two-thirds of the cash.
Bettors also expect a high-scoring game, as 68 percent of the over/under bets at FanDuel are on the over. Those bets represent 72 percent of the money wagered.
Gordon Rolling for Chargers
Monday night’s game features two of the top passing leaders in football. Chargers quarterback Phillip Rivers leads the AFC and is third in the NFL, having thrown for 2,816 yards. Mahomes, despite missing two games and a portion of another after dislocating his knee cap, has thrown for 2,626 yards in eight games.
Mahomes has also been better at not giving the ball away. Last year’s most valuable player holds an 18-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio, while Rivers’s 14 scores coincides with 10 interceptions.
But the player to watch on Monday night may just be Chargers running back Melvin Gordon.
After ending his holdout, Gordon struggled in his first few games back. That included losing a fumble at the goal line while trying to score the go-ahead touchdown in the waning moments of a 23-20 loss at Tennessee.
However, in the last two weeks, he’s gone for 80 yards and two scores on 20 carries in a win against Green Bay. He followed it up with a 108-yard effort on 22 carries that included a touchdown.
With odds of -135, Gordon is the second choice at FanDuel for scoring a touchdown on Monday night. Kansas City running back Damien Williams is the favorite at -150.
