According to ESPN reporting, state gambling regulators in Indiana and Ohio are investigating Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s alleged gambling activity.

Strict NCAA Rules
The NCAA is also investigating Sorsby, who has checked into a residential treatment program for gambling addiction.
The NCAA has strict sports wagering rules. Student-athletes are prohibited from betting on pro and college sports and face the possibility of permanent loss of eligibility for betting on one’s own team or on other sports at their own school. Other penalties include multi-year suspensions and loss of seasons of eligibility.
Sorsby is alleged to have made thousands of wagers on a variety of sports via sports betting apps, as well as bets on Indiana football as a redshirt freshman in 2022.
2027 NFL Draft
Sorsby hired attorney Jeffrey Kessler to represent him, ESPN also reported, to regain his college eligibility. Kessler is a high-profile sports lawyer, who has a successful record litigating against the NCAA, especially around antitrust litigation.
Kessler also represented Tom Brady during “Deflategate” in 2015 when he was a quarterback with the New England Patriots, and represented NFL players during “Bountygate” in 2012, involving New Orleans Saints players operating an illegal “pay-for-performance” program designed to reward defensive players for injuring opponents.
Sorsby is among a new wave of talented quarterbacks entering the Big 12, with at least ten of those teams expected to start new QBs. Many were projecting him to lead Texas Tech back to the playoffs.
Following a strong season last year at Cincinnati, where he threw for over 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns, and was named to the 2025 All-Big 12 Second Team, Sorsby transferred to Texas Tech, in December.
Thousands of Wagers
There are also big NFL implications for Sorsby, who has already played four collegiate seasons. Sorsby is the No. 5 ranked quarterback for the 2027 NFL draft, according to Sports Illustrated, behind Drew Mestemaker from Oklahoma State, LaNorris Sellers from South Carolina, Arch Manning from Texas and Dante Moore from Oregon.
Sorsby also ranks among the top paid college quarterbacks, at $5 million per year.
