Online Sportsbook MoPlay Goes Bust, Not Paying Customers, Owes Manchester United £12 Million

Online sports book MoPlay is insolvent and is no longer processing withdrawals. The Gibraltar-based company’s financial woes became widely known last Wednesday when the Gibraltar regulator suspended the operating license of parent company Addison Global because it could not pay its liabilities.
The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) followed suit 24 hours later, alleging the operator had breached an unnamed condition of its license and had been deemed “unsuitable to carry on licensed activities.”
The announcements were likely to have caused an avalanche of gamblers to withdraw their funds — until Saturday, at least, when the company decided to put a stop to any further capital flight.
In a disturbing development for those customers yet to hit the cash-out button, MoPlay announced it was suspending all withdrawals “due to financial difficulties.”
It referred gamblers to clause 9 of its terms and conditions, which states:
If there was ever a situation where we became insolvent, your funds would not be considered separate to the other company assets and you may not receive all your funds back.”
Licensed in the UK, What Gives?
The UKGC requires online gambling companies to keep customers’ money in a separate account from those used for operating costs and not to comingle the two. But unlike some jurisdictions, this does not guarantee customers will get their money back in the event of insolvency.
Operators are merely required to declare to customers the level of protection they provide. Many UK operators offer “high protection” levels, where customers’ money is held in an account that’s legally controlled by an independent person or external auditor.
Conversely, many — particularly smaller operators, like MoPlay — do not. Nor is money deposited with a gambling company protected by the government in the way that personal bank accounts are.
Some of MoPlay’s former customers took to social media over the weekend to slam UKGC’s regulations.
“How can funds be lost if they have a UKGC license?” demanded one user.
“[It] makes a mockery of their advice to not bet with an operator that doesn’t hold a UKGC license!” another suggested.
Manchester United Spat
MoPlay launched in 2018, hiring former William Hill executive Juergen Reutter as CEO, and former Ladbrokes betting and trading director, Patrick Jay, as COO. According to iGaming Business sources, the entire executive team resigned en masse, hours before the Gibraltar Gambling Commission announced the suspension of its license.
MoPlay launched with a splash by signing an “official betting partner” deal with English soccer giant Manchester United in August 2018, and shortly after, it announced a sleeve sponsorship partnership with fellow EPL team Watford.
But in September 2019, United filed suit against Select Management Resources, the US-based payday lender that had guaranteed payments from Addison Global, seeking £12 million ($15.5 million) in unpaid monies.
Watford is also understood to be seeking around £1.5 million ($1.9 million) from Addison Global.
Addison Global is a private company and thus has had, to date, no obligation to disclose its revenues or the number of registered users. Which means the amount of money it owes to its former customers is unclear.

Can only agree it is a disgrace how this supposedly licensed cowboys were allowed to continue robbing customers!
As MoPlay have yet to be declared insolvent under their T&C’s depositors money should be kept in a seperate account from company assets but withdrawal of this money is being blocked by MoPlay so when insolvency is declared it can be used to pay off vast company debts, MoPlay have been in financial difficulties since March last year but have been allowed to continue to trade and except new customers and deposits i find this inaction from the regulatory authorities disgraceful and a full inquiry should be set up to look at the system failures. This is disgusting and has totally put me off bookmakers and the authorities supposedly looking after our interests
i don't believe any of us got our money back. i made withdrawal requests before the company lost its licence and iv'e not received a penny. so even though they stated a couple of days later that they are no longer processing withdrawals, the truth is they were not processing them from around the 18th of feb. the chat team assured me i would receive my funds before the withdrawals were suspended. since then they have removed the chat option and withdrawal option on the site. they have not responded to any e-mails at all. my withdrawals still show up as pending. the British gambling commission have to take some responsibility. they knew how bad the situation was with moplay for several months and let them carry on without arranging any safeguards for customers. now the customer loses everything so the funds can be used to pay back creditors instead of the people the money actually belongs to (which is theft in my eyes). I contacted the British gambling commission and have still to receive a reply from them. i don't see the point in this body existing if its not protecting the customers its there to serve. no doubt i will be told i should have read the mountain of terms and conditions wrote on the tiniest print possible. please take into consideration the likes of mansion bet and William Hill are also level 1 protection so god forbid something was to happen to them then the customers from them companies will be in the same boat as us moplay customers. at least the directors and investors no doubt get to walk away financially unscathed, just us mugs paying for the mistakes they made.
