‘This Is How the Rich Stay Rich’: WNBA Deletes Post of Reese, Bueckers Placing $400 Bet

The WNBA faces intense scrutiny after its official social media account posted—and quickly deleted—a video of stars Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers placing a friendly $400 bet on an upcoming game, an apparent violation of the league’s strict gambling policy.

The WNBA’s official social media account on X shared a 31-second video showing Reese and Bueckers discussing a $400 bet they made between themselves for their upcoming game.

The banter was reportedly recorded during this past weekend’s WNBA All-Star Weekend, where the two superstars competed for Team Coop.

Reese and Bueckers returned to being foes for last night’s (July 29) matchup between the Atlanta Dream and Dallas Wings. Reese’s Dream won 82-81.

Players Violate CBA

In the since-deleted X video, Reese and Bueckers discuss their $400 bet on their July 29 game.

“This is how the rich stay rich,” Bueckers says in the video recorded on Reese’s phone.

“I’m gonna see you next week on Wednesday,” Reese responds. “I know you’re gonna lose.”

Bueckers seemingly doesn’t understand the terms of the bet, as she thinks Angel is the only one staking the $400.

“If we lose, you get to keep it?” Bueckers says. “No, you owe me $400,” Reese replies.

The 2026 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the WNBA and Women’s National Basketball Players Association mandates that players refrain from betting on WNBA games.

Section 5 of the WNBA CBA mandates that players who wager or attempt to wager anything of value on league competitions face fines, suspensions, or total disqualification from the league.

In the one-point victory on Wednesday night, Reese scored 22 points with 12 rebounds, four assists, and one blocked shot. Bueckers scored 16 points with six assists, four boards, and one block.

The Dream were favored by 1.5 points. The point total was 181.5, which went under at 163 points.

After the game, Reese didn’t shy away from the Bueckers bet.

“Yeah, I’ll be requesting my Apple Pay,” Reese told reporters.

WNBA Growth

The Caitlin Clark effect and the emergence of other WNBA superstars like Reese, Bueckers, and Sophie Cunningham have resulted in the women’s game experiencing massive growth over the past few seasons.

Many sportsbooks have reported that the WNBA has gone from a niche market to a mainstream sports betting staple that attracts considerable handle.

Analysts estimate that WNBA games garnered around $1.5 billion in legal bets in 2025, while the NBA attracted about $42 billion.
