Despite his childish appearance, it didn’t take long for the other pros to recognize Ungar’s gift. “I thought this must be some rich kid,” recalls poker legend Doyle Brunson. “I didn’t know I was looking at one of the best poker players to ever live.”

Won his first Gin Rummy tournament at just 10 years of age.
In 1980, he won his first World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event, becoming the youngest champion (27) at the time.

According to Hendon Mob, Stu Ungar cashed in 35 live tournaments in his life and won 16 of them. That’s a 45.7% win-rate with an unbelievable list of results which include three WSOP Main Event titles. The Super Bowl of Poker was the only other major $10,000 Hold’em tournament in the 1980’s and Ungar won that three times too.

He is one of two people in poker history to have won the World Series of Poker Main Event three times at that time (ofc max 350 ppl at that time )

Not counting the drug overdose event when he couldn’t finish ( and wound up 9th pocketing $25,050 ), he literally played the main event 3 times and won 3 times.

During his lifetime, Stu Ungar lived every gambler’s dream, becoming a legend in two different cash games. But he passed away far too soon.

Even with those moments of brilliance, victory, and reaching the highest of highs, Stu’s addiction ultimately led to his downfall.

Despite having won an estimated $30 million during his poker career, Ungar died with no assets to his name.

One time, he was walking through Las Vegas with Doyle Brunson. A man stopped him and asked for some money. Ungar pulled out a $100 bill and gave it to the man. When Brunson asked him who the man was, Ungar replied, "If I had known his name, I would have given him $200."

Having never held a golf club before in his life, Ungar was taught how to play golf by Jack Strauss who took him to a golf course and showed him how to hit the ball on a putting green. Within minutes, Ungar started making bets against him, with the more experienced player choosing to putt from further away.
Strauss kept giving Ungar advantages in distance and even an extra stroke and all the while, the stakes rose. Soon enough, Ungar had lost $78,000 betting on golf within his first hour of playing. His friend Mike Sexton later pointed out that it must be the only time in history anyone has ever lost so much betting on golf within an hour of picking up a club.

Ungar never had a bank account in his own name, preferring to keep his money in safe deposit boxes in hotels across Las Vegas.
