Types of online blackjack
There are many variations of blackjack, and at specialist online blackjack casinos, you can play all of them. Let’s look in detail at the most popular:
♠️ Classic blackjack
In classic blackjack, the aim is to beat the dealer by having a hand value as close to 21 as possible without exceeding it. You can play against real human dealers, or against a computer. There are usually six to eight decks of cards used at once and it is also called standard or American blackjack.
📹 Live blackjack
Live blackjack has the same objectives and gameplay as classic blackjack, but you play against a live dealer via a video stream. Like classic blackjack, you can double down on your initial bet after you’ve been dealt your first two cards. Some tables will also let you surrender your hand and get half your bet back if you feel you’re in a weak position
💶 European blackjack
Played with just two decks, European blackjack offers a better chance of winning in theory. This advantage is offset by the dealer only receiving one card face-up at the start of the game. The second is only drawn after all the players have completed their hands. There are also limitations on doubling down and there is usually no option to surrender.
💵 Atlantic City blackjack
Named after the New Jersey gambling hub, Atlantic City blackjack is usually played with eight decks and has unique rules and features that give more choice to players. These include late surrender, dealers standing on a soft 17, and doubling down after splits.
🔄 Blackjack switch
Blackjack switch is a modern variation of the classic game where each player is dealt two hands and can exchange the top two cards between hands. Blackjacks (an ace and a 10-value card) are paid out at 1/1 rather than the traditional 3/2, and if the dealer draws 22, it results in a tie (or push) rather than a win for the player.
🃏Other blackjack variations
There are several other versions of blackjack that are available at different online casinos including Pontoon, double exposure blackjack, perfect pairs blackjack, blackjack surrender, Vegas strip blackjack, multi-hand blackjack, Zappit blackjack, and free bet blackjack.
"All blackjack games are subject to the rules set by the casino you’re playing at. Standard payout odds for blackjack are 3/2 or 6/5, but some casinos may offer less than that. It’s always worth double checking the game rules before you make any bets so you know exactly where you stand."

How we rate the best blackjack sites
To recommend the best blackjack sites in the UK, we sign up, go to the tables and play. That way we understand what a casino is really like. Below are the most important factors a blackjack casino needs to have before we include them in our list of recommendations:
Quality and variation of blackjack games
Every online casino will offer classic blackjack, but the best blackjack casinos offer interesting variations like double exposure or Spanish 21.
Pub Casino is a standout when it comes to variation in the UK market. They offer more than 90 blackjack games including everything from Free Bet Blackjack by Evolution Gaming to Live Pub Blackjack by Stake Logic which is a Pub Casino themed live version.
Software
Not all blackjack games are created equal, so the best blackjack sites only offer games from leading blackjack software providers like Evolution Gaming, Pragmatic Play and Games Global (formerly known as Microgaming).
Grand Ivy Casino offers an outstanding choice of 62 blackjack variations from around 10 different industry heavyweights like Pragmatic Play, On Air, Games Global, and Evolution.
Bonuses
Most casino bonuses are only eligible for use on slot games. While blackjack-specific bonuses do exist, none are available in the UK right now. The casinos we recommend have top bonuses with fair terms, but they are mostly focused on slots..
For example, Dream Vegas offer £300, plus 150 free spins on top NetEnt slots like Gonzo’s Quest. The £300 bonus is one of the largest available in the UK and comes with wagering requirements of 35x – less than the market average.
Mobile experience
Being able to play when and where you want is essential. The top blackjack casinos in the UK not only provide a choice of blackjack variants from the best providers, but they also have smooth, consistent gameplay on mobile devices.
All our recommendations have blackjack available on mobile, and some go the extra mile with a downloadable app. Betway’s app has over 10,000 reviews with an average rating of 4.4 across the App Store and Google Play.
Security and responsible gaming
All the blackjack casinos we recommend hold a licence from the UK Gambling Commission. To get this licence casinos must have robust security technology like SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encryption to keep your data safe.
They are also required to provide responsible gambling tools like self-exclusion, and deposit limits. All the casinos we recommend also provide their players with access to support services like GamCare and BeGambleAware, so if they need help, it’s available.
Customer support
Even at the best casinos, things go wrong. When they do, it’s essential that there is a top-class support team ready to help you out and resolve the issue. That’s why we only recommend blackjack sites that have a track record of outstanding customer support.
Pub Casino is a leader in this area. Our review team scored them 5/5 thanks to 24/7 support on live chat, and a phone line available 7am–midnight.
Blackjack rules UK players must know
The aim of classic blackjack is simple – beat the dealer. You do this by having a hand value closer to 21 without going over. If your hand is 22 or more, you go “bust” and lose your bet.
The best hand in the game is a ‘blackjack’ – when you are dealt an ace paired with any 10-value card, for example Ace of diamonds and King of clubs.
Blackjack card values
Only the card values (numbers) matter in blackjack. Neither the suit nor colour of the card matter. Nearly all cards are worth their face value, with one (very important) exception.
- Aces: 1 or 11, depending on which value is better for the hand
- Face/picture cards (Jack, Queen, King): 10
- 2–10: Face value
Gameplay
The game starts with each player being dealt two cards face-up. When all the players have their cards, the dealer also gets two cards, one face-up (upcard), and one face-down (hole card).
Players then have the following options:
- Hit: Ask for another card to try and improve their hand value.
- Stand: Keep the cards they have and end their turn.
- Double down: Double the initial bet, get one more card, and then stand.
- Split: If the first two cards are of equal value, the player can split them into two separate hands with separate bets.
When all players have completed their turns, the dealer takes theirs. They follow strict rules on whether to hit or stand:
- They must hit until their hand has a value of at least 17.
- They must stand on a hand value of 17 or higher.
Example: Two players have hands of 18 and 20, and it’s the dealer’s turn. The dealer’s upcard is four of clubs, their hold card is three of diamonds. They are obliged to hit because their hand value is seven.
The next card they receive is a Jack of clubs. This takes their hand value to 17 and ends their turn as they must stand on a value of 17 or higher, regardless of the player's hand values. They can’t hit again and try to land a number that would beat the players, so their turn ends and the two players win.
What happens if you have the same hand value as the dealer?
If a player and dealer have equal hand values at the end of their turn, it results in a “push” (tie), and the player’s bet is returned to them. They neither win nor lose.
If you are dealt a blackjack, you win unless the dealer also has one. After you receive your cards, if the dealer’s upcard is an ace or 10-value card, they will check their hole card to see if they also have a blackjack. If they do, it’s a push and your bet is returned.
Any other players on the table that don’t have a blackjack immediately lose, and their turn is over because the dealer’s blackjack can’t be beaten.
Blackjack payout odds
Below, we’ve listed the payouts for different blackjack variations. Note that the amount for a blackjack (an ace and any 10-value card) is more than a ‘standard’ win where you beat the dealer with a hand of 18, for example.
Blackjack variant | Payout for blackjack | Standard payout |
---|---|---|
Classic blackjack | 3/2 | 1/1 |
Live blackjack | 3/2 | 1/1 |
European blackjack | 3/2 | 1/1 |
Atlantic City blackjack | 3/2 | 1/1 |
Blackjack Switch | 1/1 | 1/1 |
House edge in online blackjack
Blackjack has one of the most player-friendly house edges of any casino game, ranging from 0.3%-1%. House edge is the mathematical advantage the casino has over the players expressed as a percentage.
For example, a house edge of 2% means that in theory, for every £100 a player bets, the casino will win £2. For context, house edge on other casino games varies from 1.36% – 1.41% in craps, 2.7% in single zero roulette, and 5-15% in slots.
Here are the typical house edges for the main types of blackjack:
Blackjack variant | House edge |
---|---|
Classic blackjack | 0.5% to 1% |
Live blackjack | 0.5% to 1% |
European blackjack | 0.39% to 0.62% |
Atlantic City blackjack | 0.35% to 0.36% |
Blackjack switch | 0.58% to 0.72% |
"House edges are calculated on mathematical probability in the long term, so don’t expect them to be accurate in a single session. Although blackjack has a better house edge than other casino games, this is only if you have a perfect understanding of blackjack strategy and make exactly the right call at the right time."
Expert tips for success at blackjack casinos
Know the rules for your table
Blackjack has many variations, and even games with the same name might have different rules or payouts from one online blackjack casino to the next. Before you start any blackjack session, understand the exact rules of the table you’re playing at. If they aren’t what you expect, leave, and play somewhere else.
Use blackjack strategy
Unlike many casino games, blackjack isn’t just down to luck. You have choices every hand, so learning and implementing basic blackjack strategy will help you maximise your opportunities.
Ideally you want to know what the best move is statistically for every possible hand, so you can make the right call. Strategy cards can help – they tell you whether to hit, stand, double down or split based on your hand and the dealer’s upcard.
Manage your bankroll properly
A bankroll is your budget when you’re playing blackjack. It applies to both a single session or extended period, and helps you stick to a strategy, and stop you getting drawn into chasing losses or making emotional bets.
All experienced blackjack players use a bankroll, as it helps you keep control and have an enjoyable experience at the tables.
Learn about advanced strategies
If you’re an experienced blackjack player and have a full grasp of basic strategy, rules, and bankroll management, it could be time to try some more advanced strategies. Firstly, card counting is one of the most famous, a difficult-to-master strategies but it can give you an edge on the casino.
Looking for dealer tells may also be worthwhile. This is when you look for a reaction in the dealer’s facial expressions or body language after they have looked at their hole card. You’re trying to read their reaction and get an indication on what card they have.
This technique is risky because experienced dealers should do a good job in hiding tells, and you don’t want to be chasing a red herring. Both should be done with caution, but done correctly, these advanced techniques could increase your chances of winning.

Can you get a bonus if you play blackjack online?
All online casinos offer bonuses but they often aren't available for use on table or live casino games like blackjack. Bonuses are typically only available on slot games, and if blackjack qualifies, only 5 or 10% of each bet will count towards wagering requirements.
If you're interested in bonuses and using any winnings to fund your blackjack bankroll, here’s what you can expect:
Deposit match
The most common type of welcome bonus, average deposit matches are between £100-200 with wagering requirements of 35-40x. Sometimes new casinos offer huge sums to grab attention and bring players in, but make sure you check the Ts&Cs before accepting anything.
📷 Our favourite: Pub Casino 100% up to £100.
Free spins
Free spins are an amazing bonus because they often come with no wagering requirements. That means any cash you win can be put straight into your blackjack bankroll.
📷 Our favourite: Magic Red Casino 100 no wagering spins.
Cashback
Casinos can give cashback offers which return a certain amount of your losses at the end of each week or month – usually 10%.
📷 Our favourite: All British Casino 10% cashback.
No deposit bonuses
Sometimes casinos will give you a small bonus before you’ve made a deposit. Although it’s rare, you will occasionally find £5-10 no deposit bonus offers, or a set amount of free spins to new players just for creating an account.
The best software providers for online blackjack
The software company that made the blackjack game you’re playing are ultimately responsible for the quality of your experience, so you want to play games from industry leaders.
If you are playing an online blackjack game from any of the following providers, you’re in good hands:
- Evolution Gaming
Since 2006, Evolution Gaming has been providing standout live casino experiences. They created blackjack variations including Infinite Blackjack and Free Bet Blackjack and are the go-to provider for leading UK casinos.
- Playtech
Playtech is one of the most recognisable names in online gambling, and they have been producing blackjack software for over 20 years. They create both live and computer-based blackjack games and have released titles including Blackjack Switch and Premium Blackjack.
- Microgaming
Established in 1994, Microgaming has been at the forefront of online casino software for three decades. They led the industry into multi-hand and mobile-friendly blackjack versions, something which is now commonplace in all leading casinos.
Alternative casino games
- Online pokies
If you’re looking to have maximum fun while gambling, it’s hard to look past slots. There is no element of strategy in a slot game, so you can sit back and enjoy the ride. There are no rules to learn, and there are thousands of fun games to choose from with themes ranging from movies to ancient Egypt.
- Online roulette
Another less strategy-heavy game than blackjack, roulette is the classic table game of chance. The house edge on single zero roulette is not too much bigger than blackjack, but you have less decisions to make. If you’re looking to leave things mostly to chance, roulette is a fun option.
- Online poker
Like blackjack, poker is a game of skill that will keep you engaged and, on the ball, throughout. You play against other human players, not the casino, and strategy should be front and centre of your decision making. The variables are much higher than blackjack, but so are the potential rewards.
