Rumor: Jim Murren Set to Take Over as Resorts World President and CEO [UPDATED]
NOTE: This story has been updated since publication. Please see details at bottom.
According to several sources, former MGM Resorts CEO Jim Murren is reportedly set to take over as president and CEO of Resorts World Las Vegas.
Murren has a long and colorful history in Las Vegas, a perfect match for the struggling Resorts World, a resort which has been plagued by controversy since it opened in 2021.
Things are so bad at Resorts World, the resort just had its worst financial quarter in two years and blamed it on the heat. We are not making this up.
No official announcement has been made about Jim Murren taking the reins at Resorts World, but when has that ever stopped us from scooping the old-timey media on the biggest stories in Las Vegas? We reached out to Resorts World, but haven’t heard back yet.
Murren most recently has been CEO and Executive Chairman of Ritz Carlton Yacht Collection. He’s also Chairman of General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority, whatever that might be, and Co-Chairman Cirque du Soleil. The Cirque thing is very useful in casino management because you deal with a lot of clowns.
Whatever one might think of Jim Murren, he has a clean record and is relatively well-regarded in the casino industry. That was not the case with the former CEO of Resorts World, Scott Sibella.
Sibella got the boot after he “violated company policies and the terms of his employment.” Basically, he turned a blind eye to money laundering.
Sibella’s temporary stand-in has been Resorts World’s Chief Financial Officer, Peter LaVoie.
Murren has reportedly been meeting with Resorts World staff for the last four days, and we trust he hasn’t just been there to enjoy the resort’s amenities.
Among Jim Murren’s most impressive accomplishments was when he fixed COVID as chair of the Nevada COVID-19 Response, Relief and Recovery Task Force.
He also invented paid parking.
If Murren takes over at Resorts World as rumored, he’s taking on an undeniable challenge. He’s going to have to clean up a lot of handshake deals inside the resort, get rid of the folks Sibella took the fall for and figure out how to right the resort’s financial ship. No pressure.
Update (12/5/24): It seems out story nudged Resorts World into making an official announcement. Jim Murren will head up a four-person board overseeing Resorts World, with Alex Dixon as CEO. Read more.
