How we review US online casinos
Background and safety check
We first check casino security and safe gaming in our 25-step review process. Each real money online casino we review needs a license from gaming authorities in each of the states they operate in. This means they offer legal online casino real money gaming that’s subject to local laws regarding player protection and fair play. We also vet the casino’s parent company and expect to see top gaming software and player data protected with industry-standard SSL encryption.
Deposit funds and contact customer support
We’ll make some test casino deposits to review the speed and ease of paying. I'd also expect to see a range of popular US payment providers accepted, including PayPal, wire transfer, Visa, paysafecard, eCheck, Neteller, and others. We contact support to see their response times and ability to resolve issues. Ideally help will be available 24/7.
Play games and cash out winnings
We’ll chalk up some extensive gameplay at the casino lobby, trialing both desktop and mobile casino, including any apps. We have enough experience as players to recognize a good range of online casino real money games and innovative new variants. I expect good-quality graphics and speedy gameplay for online slots, blackjack, roulette, and live games. Payout rates should also offer a strong return to player percentage. Any winnings are then requested at the cashier to see the speed and ease of cashing out.

How to play at an online casino with real cash
Getting started at a real money online casino in the US is easy. You just need to follow a few simple steps. We've highlighted them here:
- 1
Pick your favorite US real money casino
You can pick from our recommended casinos list based on your preferences. Look for game selection, and payment methods in particular.

Sign-up
Once you're on your preferred site, enter your details as requested. You might need to verify at this stage too, but not all sites require this.

4. Make your first deposit
Find the method you're most comfortable with. I like to use e-wallets such as PayPal or Neteller but pick something you are familiar with and trust.
- 5
5. Start playing!
You're now good to go! Navigate the casino lobby or head straight to your favorite game. Bear in mind wagering requirements as you go.

Which US states can I play online casinos for real money?
Real online casino gambling is legal in Connecticut, Delaware, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Below we’ve detailed more on how gambling became legal in each state.
Connecticut
After a state-tribal gaming contract between Connecticut and the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes, legislation authorizing online sports betting, casino gaming, and Daily Fantasy Sports was enacted in May 2021 when Governor Ned Lamont signed HB6451. The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection authorized the launch of both online sports betting and iCasino markets. Connecticut formally launched legal online casino gaming on October 19, 2021, which saw games provided by three online brands regulated by the Connecticut Gaming Division.

Delaware
The first state to legalize online gambling, Governor Jack Markell signed the Delaware Gaming Competitiveness Act (HB333) back on June 28, 2012. The state’s three casinos (Delaware Park, Dover Downs, and Harrington Raceway & Casino) then launched online offerings with free games of slots, poker, roulette, and blackjack on November 7, 2013, followed by a full complement of real money online casino games which became available in 2014 (once again America’s first). Gambling in the state is overseen by the Delaware Lottery.

Michigan
After a couple of years of proposals from Republican Brandt Iden, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the Michigan Lawful Gaming Act (HB 4311) and Lawful Sports Betting Act (HB 4916) on December 11 and December 20, 2019 respectively, legalizing gambling in the state. This legislature included online sports betting, online casino games, and online poker. Online casinos launched from some 15 providers on January 22, 2021.

New Jersey
New Jersey legislated for online casino gambling in 2013, with Governor Chris Christie signing legislation on February 26. With 12 online casinos operating in the state by 2017, New Jersey had the largest offering of any state in the US. Online sports betting followed in 2018. Gaming in the state, online and in person, is regulated under the New Jersey Casino Control Act (N.J.S.A. 15:12-1 to -233), and the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement regulates the online casino gambling and sports betting industries and issues licenses.

Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania was the fourth state to legalize online casino gambling when Governor Tom Wolf signed Truck Stop and Satellite Casino Bill HB 271 on October 30, 2017. Online casino brands didn’t appear until July 2019, however. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board oversees regulation and licensing in the state.

West Virginia
Online gambling launched in West Virginia in 2019 when Governor Jim Justice and state legislators passed the West Virginia Lottery Interactive Wagering Act (HB2934). DraftKings was the first online casino to launch in the state on July 15, 2020, and BetMGM followed that August. The West Virginia Lottery Commission oversees online casino gambling in the state.

The best land-based US casinos
The US has been home to gambling establishments of some kind for hundreds of years. Early saloons of the Old West in the 1800s offered cards and dice games, and the first legal American casinos emerged in 1931 when Nevada legalized gambling. In 1976 New Jersey followed suit with gambling legislation that allowed Atlantic City to develop into America's second largest gambling city.
Today, gambling in the US is a $240 billion industry, with 44 states having some form of casino venue. This amounts to there being anything up to 2,200 betting premises available across the United States. From Las Vegas to Mississippi, we’ve ranked the best in our guide to your local US casinos.

Tips for gambling responsibly
- 1Have a budget you can stick to – Always bet only what you can afford to lose. Having a budget allows you to enjoy your game knowing you’re within limits, and to know when to stop.
- 2Take regular breaks – Having a few days or weeks off to reset and destress from the game allows you to stay fresh and think clearly whenever you’re wagering money on casino games.
- 3Never chase your losses – It’s a false economy to try to bet harder to recoup losses. Enjoy the game for what it is, and when you’re budget’s up, it’s time to stop.
- 4Be in the right frame of mind – Never play when you’re tired, emotional, or under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. It’s important that your faculties are unimpeded to allow you to bet smarter and enjoy the game.
- 5Know the odds – Understand exactly where your game sits in the risk scale and what returns a win might offer you (or potential losses).
- 6Seek help if you need it – There are various organizations who can help and advise you if your gambling begins to be a problem for you.
Problem gambling support in the US
We’ve noted some of the most popular organizations that can help with information, problem gambling support, and open discussions should you or a loved one need help with problem gambling.

- 1-800-Gambler – The national problem gambling helpline.
