President-elect Donald Trump recently commented on the idea of making Canada the “51st state,” prompting a swift and spirited response from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in defense of the Great White North earlier this week.

Following this exchange, we analyzed millions of posts on X (formerly known as Twitter) to uncover the sentiments of both Canadians and Americans regarding Trump’s statement. Additionally, we explored the odds of Canada and its provinces ever becoming the “51st state” during Trump’s upcoming presidency.

Key Findings:

  • 66% of X posts in Canada expressed negative sentiments about it becoming Trump’s “51st state”
  • 60% of America’s X posts also shared the same negative sentiments on Trump’s statements 
  • Canada ranks 5th overall in most likely countries to become the “51st state” during Trump’s presidency, with a low 9.1% probability of it ever happening 
  • Provincially, Quebec has the highest probability at 33.3%, followed by Alberta (25%), then Yukon (16.7%)

Based on millions of X posts about the “51st state” topic, here’s how Canadians, Americans, and users around the globe reacted online:

Approximately 66% of Canadians reacted negatively to the idea, while 60% of Americans expressed similar sentiments. Globally, 65% of X users also opposed the notion of Canada becoming the “51st state.”

While the idea of Canada becoming the “51st state” is theoretically possible, the overwhelming online sentiment suggests it is highly unlikely. Canadians, Americans, and users from around the world have expressed strong opposition to such a move, making it clear that support for this notion is minimal.

To uncover social media sentiments, Meltwater (a social listening tool) was used to analyze Canadians’ reactions to Trump’s recent 51st state announcement. Please note that some provinces and territories weren’t listed due to insufficient amount of data.
