The Most & Least Critical NFL Fan Bases Towards Referees
We’ve all heard the classic sideline shout, “You’ve got to be kidding me! How did the ref miss that call?!” It’s a line we’re all too familiar with, whether the complaint is justified or not. But hey, what’s a sport fan base without die-hards who love to blame referees when the game doesn’t go their way?
As we reach halftime in the NFL season, we wanted to know which fan bases throw the most/least blame at their referees. We analyzed thousands of X (Twitter) posts since the start of the season, breaking down which fan bases have the most negative – and surprisingly, positive – sentiments toward the officials.
Key Findings:
- Biggest Ref Blamers: Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Washington Commanders fans all tied for the top spot
- Los Angeles Rams fans rank #2 in referee complaints, with 95.4% of X posts expressing negative sentiments toward refs
- Houston Texans follow in #3 place, with 92.2% of X posts pointing fingers at referees
- Most Ref-Friendly Fans: Tennessee Titans fans show the most support for referees, according to 60% of X posts
Blame game: Fans most likely to call out referees
In a four-way tie for the top spot, fans of the Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Washington Commanders are the most vocal referee critics online. Each fan base scored a whopping 100% negative sentiment in analyzed X posts! From a Commanders fan venting, “Referees were terrible in the NFL yesterday,” to a Bucs fan claiming, “The referee error swung the chances of the Buccaneers winning significantly,” it’s clear that these fan bases are passionate and ready to defend their team’s honor at every call – literally.
The Los Angeles Rams fans rank #2 in referee complaints, with 95.4% of their X posts reflecting negative sentiments. One fan questioned, “So because the referee crew made the wrong call, the Rams are punished for it with a 10-second run off? Make it make sense?” During the October 25th game against the Vikings, Rams fans even came to the Vikings’ defense with one post calling out, “The whole referee crew of the Vikings and Rams game should be investigated and fired,” following a missed facemask penalty call. They’re definitely not afraid to hold back when it comes to questionable calls!
Coming in #3 place, the Houston Texans fans aren’t afraid to hold ‘em accountable, with 92.2% of X posts showing negative sentiment toward referees. One fan declared, “The worst referee crew ever in a regular season game!” while another put it bluntly, “If the Texans lose by three points, it is quite literally the referee’s fault”. Texans’ fans are all in when it comes to calling out bad officiating – and they won’t fold!
Rounding out the top 5, New England Patriots fans take the #4 spot with 91.5% of X posts showing negative sentiments towards referees; while Las Vegas Raiders fans slide into #5, with 90.9% of their posts calling out refs. Both clearly aren’t shy about expressing their frustration when calls don’t go their way!
Top 5 most ref-friendly fan bases
The Tennessee Titans fans top the list as the least critical, with 60% of their X posts showing positive sentiments toward referees. Most of their posts include light-hearted memes and photos from Titans games, playfully highlighting the refs. As long as it’s not a negative, it’s a win – right?
Following closely behind, Denver Broncos fans rank #2 with 57.1% positive sentiments towards refs. During a Broncos vs. Raiders game, one fan even took a moment to applaud the officials online! Pittsburgh Steelers fans come in at #3 place, with 53.1% positive sentiments. Much like the Titans, they keep it light, with comments like, “That referee loves showing off his right bicep!” Hey, if you got it, flaunt it!
Rounding out the top 5, the Seattle Seahawks fans take the #4 spot with 51.4% of their posts showing a friendly (virtual) nod towards refs. Meanwhile, the Chicago Bears and Carolina Panthers tie for #5, with their posts split evenly – a 50/50 balance of both positive and negative sentiments towards these officials.
Conclusion
In the end, you’re not a true sports fan if you haven’t complained about a referee (or few) at least once. While some are quicker to call them out than others, it all comes down to fans’ deep love and passion for their favorite NFL team.
Methodology
In November 2024, we used Meltwater, a social listening and monitoring tool, to scrape thousands of X posts, analyzing which NFL fan bases show the most negative and positive sentiments towards referees. Our analysis focused on posts from the start of the 2024 NFL season (Sept. 5) through Oct. 31st.
